"The Love I Thought I'd Found" b/w "Strange Affair"
Columbia, UK, DB 8030, Oct. '66.
Some promotional copies of the UK pressing of "The Love I Thought I'd Found" came with a black & white picture sleeve. The photograph is the same on the front and back. It is the "Desdemona" shot of the band, but obviously there is no woman and Geoff is on the shot instead of Marc who was airbrushed in later on for the "Desdemona" sleeve.

REO, Canada, 8976X, Oct. '66.

"Smashed Blocked" b/w "Strange Affair"
White Whale, US, WW 239, Oct. '66.
The American release of "Smashed Blocked" has two different labels. One features small writing and the other large.

Polydor, Germany, 59069, Feb. '67.

"Not The Sort Of Girl You Take To Bed" b/w ?
Columbia, UK, release cancelled.
This was supposed to be the third single but the release was cancelled when John's Children were dropped by Columbia. It is usually mentioned in discographies (with "release cancelled" next to it) but I doubt if any such record actually exists. Pressing cancelled, more likely.

There is also a Russian flexi disc of "Desdemona" which came out around 1995 and was issued in clear, red and green.

"Midsummer Night's Scene" b/w "Sara Crazy Child"
Track, UK, 604 005, Jul. '67, test pressing only.
The most legendary record of all. Not only is "Midsummer Night's Scene" the band's most well known song (along with "Desdemona"), it is also one of the most wanted records of all time among collectors. There only ever was a test pressing (25 to 50 copies, no one seems to remember!) made of the record before the release was withdrawn. There have been several different unofficial repro editions of the record, some even with picture sleeves. From Record Collector, June 2002: A copy of "Midsummer Night's Scene", one of Britain's rarest and most sought-after 45's, has just been auctioned for a record breaking £3,700. Dave Thurbon adds: "The continuing allure of this 45, other than its mega-rarity, is due to its status as a kind of 'ultimate' record. Not just for collectors of UK psych and of Bolan, but also for fans of 60's music in general and proto-punk bands in particular. The single's fame has spread so far that it has become a 'world-class collectable' and will continue to command a stratospheric price on the international market."

"Come And Play With Me In The Garden" b/w "Sara Crazy Child"
SNB 001, Jul. '67, testpress only.
There are 2 types of test pressings for the "Come And Play" white label. One features a typed label and the other is hand written. The Growing Up With John's Children book says: Simon Napier-Bell formed his own label and this record was probably the first fruit of the enterprise. It has a matrix number of SNB 001 A/B and the flip side has a slightly extended take of "Sara Crazy Child". Unlikely to have been released commercially as at this time the band were still under contract to Track records.

"Come And Play With Me In The Garden" b/w "Sara Crazy Child"
Track, UK, 604 005, Aug. '67.
The matrix number is the same as on the "Midsummer Night's Scene" single because that was never commercially released.

Exists both as promo copies and stock copies. The sleeve with the round image of the band was designed by Dean Torrence (of Jan & Dean).   Marc Bolan: The Beginning Of Doves
Castle, 491 CMRCD, remastered CD (with 37 tracks), 2002.
A cash-in album put out by Track records but still a great compilation of pre JC Bolan demos (made on Napier-Bell's request to introduce the material to John's Children) and tracks recorded immediately after he quit JC. Lots of JC related tracks, such as "Jasper C. Debussy" which has the same backing track as "Casbah Candy" (which Andy sings), and best of all, Tyrannosaurus Rex doing "Sara Crazy Child", "Hot Rod Mama" and "Sally Was An Angel" etc... A highly interesting release for JC fans. The album has been re-released several times as different budget priced CDs such as Prehistoric, Misty Mist, You Scare Me To Death etc., all of which are comprised more or less of The Beginning Of Doves material.
